JOY Kitchens
The goal of the JOY Kitchens initiative is to improve the lives of women and families of Kager village by introducing and providing households with six simple household solutions, including:
- Improved Stove
- Fireless Basket Cooker
- Smoke Hood and Chimney
- Household Water Purifier
- Solar Lantern
- Food Canning
JOY stands for “Jesus, Others, Yourself” and is a core component of this outreach program to the women of Kager village. Utilizing the concepts of Community Health Evangelism (CHE), leadership for the JOY Kitchens initiative is provided by the women of the four local churches of Kager and is accomplished in the form of “women’s empowerment groups.” These groups consist of 8-10 women and are a place for fellowship, encouragement, accountability, Bible study, discipleship and training. Training focuses primarily on family and women’s health issues, including:
- Sanitation and Hygiene
- Health and Disease Prevention
- Maternal Health
Over the course of one year, the women in a JOY Kitchens group are trained on each of the six simple solutions: how to use them, the household issues they address, and the benefits they will provide to them and their families. After each module of training, each solution is distributed to the women and there are follow-up sessions on how their use is going. The cost of a complete JOY Kitchen is approximately $200.
